Sunday, March 3rd at Slippery Rock University, Godwin Louis and James Umble will be the special guest at their 8th Annual Saxophone Workshop. The events are open to the public and free. The event will also feature Alton Merrell, Jeff Grubbs on bass, and David Glover on drums playing with Godwin Louis. Come on out!

Join Clarksburg natives Brian Wolfe and Karen Greene, and West Virginia native Reggie Watkins, Pittsburgh based musician Alton Merrell and MANY more on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

This concert pays tribute to the spirit and richness of Black music in America—and its enduring strength in times of tumult and trouble.

Join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, conductor Anthony Parnther, and special guests for an evening that uplifts and amplifies community. The concert features GRAMMY® Award winner Oleta Adams, whose gospel-rooted voice has graced era-defining albums like Tears For Fears’ "The Seeds of Love” (1989) and her own platinum-selling “Circle of One” (1990). The Lift Every Voice Unity Choir conducted by Nikki Porter and trombonist Cooper Cromwell-Whitley join the program to make hearts and voices soar. All ages welcome.

Come early at 6:00 p.m. to experience the exhibit “I Too Play: Unveiling the History of Black Classical Musicians in Pittsburgh” curated by Candance Burgess.

Stay after to hear a Jazz Ensemble from AAMI (Afro American Music Institute) in the Grand Lobby of Heinz Hall.

Alton Merrell in Concert with the Rhodes College Jazz Faculty

Alton Merrell will be in concert with the Rhodes College Jazz Faculty - Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 7:30pm in McNeil Concert Hall. Alton Merrell will also give a Master Class and Steinway Piano Spirio demonstration on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 4:30 in Hassell Hall.

Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra Holiday Celebration with special guest Ann Hampton Callaway is a live melding of two of MCG Jazz’ holiday recordings: The Hope of Christmas and Joyful Jazz. Both Christmas albums were released in October 2015 and feature a mix of traditional favorites and brand new music for all to enjoy. Their performance on December 21, 2023, will be a presentation of tunes from both records and celebrates the season in a new way.

An unforgettable theatrical jazz benefit concert celebrating the music of composer Billy Strayhorn and the imagery of performer Gene Kelly in an unforgettable theatrical jazz benefit concert. We warmly welcome music director and pianist Dr. Alton Merrell, as well as band members: Dwayne Dolphin (bass), James Johnson III (drum), and Colter Harper (guitar). The concert features jazz singer and Billy Strayhorn aficionado Joshua Banbury, along with Suite Life veterans kelsey jumper and Treasure Treasure. Kelly Strayhorn Theater welcomes back friends, media artist Scott Andrew, and lighting designer Madeleine Steineck for a dazzling visual experience. Let’s dress for jazz and “sing in the rain,” immersing ourselves in the shower of rich and lush harmonies.
